BABCOCK'S DINNER PARTY: BLOG POST

VELKOPOPOVICKY KOZEL - Babcock's Dinner Party

I have wasted a good part of my adult life listening to one Thomas P. Babcock Esq. explain the difference between a drinkable pint and a great beer. For the past ten years, Tom and I have met every night after work at the Cambridge on Charing Cross Road and enjoyed a pint and a bite to eat before heading home to family. Tom loves beer. He REALLY loves beer. He has even applied to be admitted to the British Guild of Beer Writers.

"Tonight, I have a special surprise for you," he began before I could get my umbrella down and stow my Macintosh.

In 2013, there were 274, 641 babies born to females ages 15-19. Nearly 81% of these births occurred outside of marriage. Although the teen birth rate has been declining over recent years, the U.S. rate is higher than that of many other developed countries, including Canada and the United Kingdom.

Not all teen births are first births either. In 2013, one in six births to 15-19-year-olds were to

VESELE VELIKONOCE - “HAPPY EASTER”

Grandmother Anichka never forgot the Easter traditions she grew up with. “Ohhh,” she would begin as she remembered her childhood in Prague. “Velike’ noci,” she would intone casting her eyes to the sky with a big smile on her face. “Great nights,” she would say with joy. “Great celebrations; velike’ noci; so wonderful; such joy; we were so young and hopeful before the war.

I realized I had no idea where the tradition of Easter eggs came from. Grandmother Anichka, however, was nodding knowingly like she always did when she was about to educate you.

FOOD IMPORTER Blog: Little Miss Muffet

Little Miss Muffet
Sat on her tuffet
Eating of curds and whey

So begins the old English nursery rhyme that school children recite to this day. It first appeared in print in 1805 in a book titled, Songs for the Nursery. Today, few Londoners know what a tuffet is, let alonecurds and whey.  Let's get tuffet out of the way immediately.

There came a great spider
Who sat down beside her
And frightened Miss Muffet away

A tuffet, of course, is a pouffe, or what we call today, a hassock. It is distinguished from a stool by being completely covered in cloth so that no legs are visible. However, the tuffet that Little Miss Muffet sat on was not furniture at all. When the nursery rhyme was written back in the early 17th century, a "tuffet" was a little grassy mound or hill.

TOP 10 CZECH COCKTAILS - THE LEGACY OF JACOB DOUBEK

My wife decided to throw an Easter party for our friends and business associates. "Could you handle the drinks?" she asked over breakfast last Monday.

"Certainly," I responded without looking up from the morning news.

"Not the same old thing. Let's not be boring this year," she said in a slightly more insistent tone. "I mean, have all the necessary beer and wine, but think up some new punch or cocktail mixes or something. Let's try to be a little novel.
